Little Owls Nursery, Chapeltown.
110 kWp for Leeds City Council.
A 110 kWp commercial solar PV installation for Little Owls Nursery, operated by Leeds City Council in the Chapeltown community, completed in March 2023. The flat-roof, non-penetrative ballasted system was installed while the nursery stayed open.

A flat roof, a live nursery
and a council sustainability strategy.
Little Owls Nursery, operated by Leeds City Council, provides early years education for the Chapeltown community. As part of its wider environmental and sustainability strategy, the council aims to cut carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and lower operating costs across its estate. Steady daytime demand from lighting, heating, the kitchen and education facilities made the nursery well suited to solar PV.
The project brought engineering and operational challenges. The flat roof needed a non-penetrative mounting system that would leave the building fabric untouched while meeting strict structural loading and wind uplift requirements.
Access and safety mattered just as much, because the nursery stayed open throughout the installation. The work had to be planned to keep disruption to a minimum and the site safe for staff and children.
A bespoke 110 kWp system
on a ballasted flat-roof mount.
We designed and installed a 110 kWp solar PV system around the building and the way it is used. High-efficiency Canadian Solar 410 W panels are paired with a Huawei 110 kW inverter for reliable performance and detailed monitoring.
We chose a Van der Valk ballasted mounting system for a secure, compliant installation with no roof penetration, protecting the building structure while keeping the panels well positioned for generation.

Nursery open throughout
Offsetting the nursery's electricity
and supporting council targets.
The completed solar PV system generates renewable electricity on site, directly offsetting the nursery’s electricity use and contributing to Leeds City Council’s carbon reduction commitments. It provides long-term savings and a stable, sustainable source of energy.
The project shows how we deliver large flat-roof installations on occupied public buildings, helping public sector organisations work towards their sustainability and energy targets.
No generation or savings figures are recorded in the project document, so none are shown.
